Gator Wins Gold

UF alumnus Ryan Lochte wins the United States’ first gold of the 2012 London Olympic Games.

swimming the butterfly at UFWith First Lady Michelle Obama cheering him on, Ryan Lochte (BSR ’11) won the men’s 400m individual medley Saturday afternoon in London, securing the USA’s first gold medal of the games.

Lochte won in 4:05.18, besting U.S. rival and fourth-place finisher Michael Phelps by more than four seconds.

“I know it’s my time, and I’m ready,” Lochte told the BBC after the race. “I’m just going out there and having fun and doing what I do best, which is racing.”
